WhatsApp users will now be blocked if they are under 16

Millions of WhatsApp users face a disappointing weekend as new rules have begun coming into force.

This now means that anyone aged under 16 will be blocked from using the app.

The changes will be made official from May 25 but it seems some users have already started being asked to prove their age.

When opening the popular service a message will appear with a full set of new terms and conditions plus updates to the privacy policy.

Users can then only access their messages once they have confirmed that they are 16 or older.

“WhatsApp Ireland Limited provides our Service and is responsible for your information when you use WhatsApp.

"To use WhatsApp, confirm below that you’re at least 16 years old,” the message reads.

Until now, WhatsApp has allowed 13 year-olds to join the messaging service – however, this has now changed with the introduction of the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

WhatsApp said the update ensured it could "meet the new high standards of transparency for how we protect the privacy of our users".

The company said it plans to keep the over-13 age restriction in the rest of the world.

This major update to its terms come as the Facebook-owned app looks set to get some other big changes.

WhatsApp working on new feature 'WhatsApp Business'

Speculation surrounding the chat app grew after WhatsApp founder Jan Koum recently left the company.

Rumors have been rife about the role adverts will play in the future of WhatsApp since the exec's departure.

And now Facebook’s vice president of messaging products, David Marcus, has said WhatsApp will be more open to advertisers.

Speaking to CNBC, he said: "As far as advertising is concerned, we're definitely getting WhatsApp more open.

"We're now going to have the ability to enable larger companies, not only small businesses, to integrate a new API [application programming interface] to send and receive messages with people on the WhatsApp platform.”
